5 Ways to Use AI for an Easier, Smarter Job Search

Job hunting can be a nerve-wracking task, especially when you’re competing with hundreds of people. But AI can give you the edge to stand out, apply for more roles, make more connections and land that dream role. Here are five ways you can use AI to make your job search easier:

1. Level up your resume with AI tools

Getting your resume just right is no easy feat. Luckily, AI tools like Kickresume, Novoresume, and Enhancv can help you polish your resume. These tools ensure your resume passes through Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), which is software that scans for specific keywords before a human even looks at it. And if you don’t feel like paying for a service, no worries—just use ChatGPT or Claude to help.

Sample prompt:

“Please review this job description and my resume that I have attached. Help me update my resume using my experience only, leveraging experience and keywords highlighted in the job description.”

2. Say no to generic cover letters. Customize with AI

A cover letter can set you apart, but it’s tempting to use the same one for every single job. AI tools like ChatGPT have you covered. They can craft a personalized letter, including all the important details from the job description and your resume, so your application stands out.

Sample prompt:

“Please help me write a cover letter for a marketing manager role. Here’s the job description: [paste description], and here’s my experience: [paste experience]. Please leverage key words from job description and my resume to draft the cover letter. I have also attached a file that showcases my writing style. Please use my style and tone to help draft the cover letter as well.

3. Do your homework on companies with AI

Researching companies used to be a headache, but not anymore! With AI tools like Perplexity AI, you can quickly find out a lot about a company’s culture, values, and even leadership. Got a lot of info to go through? Upload the company’s annual report into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, and ask it to summarize the key points for you.

Sample Prompt:

“I’ve uploaded the annual report for [Company]. Please create a detailed bulleted summary with data points about their financials. Then please provide a detailed bulleted summary of their future plans. Then please provide a detailed bulleted summary of their CEO’s letter to shareholders. Please include links to specific areas of report so I may read in detail.”

4. Ace your interviews with AI prep

Prepping for an interview can cause anxiety, but AI tools can help you to prepare. Platforms like ChatGPT, Skillora.ai, and Interviewing.io can give you mock interview questions tailored to the job you’re applying for. You can even ask ChatGPT to spot gaps in your resume and suggest ways to address them during the interview.

Sample Prompt:

“I have attached the job description for a project manager role and my resume. Can you identify any gaps and help me to brainstorm options for closing these gaps? Please also help me to brainstorm interview questions that may come up regarding these gaps?”

5. Boost your LinkedIn game

Your LinkedIn profile is your online resume—make sure it’s up to date and working for you! Update your profile photo, make your headline clear, and write a great summary. Not sure what to post? Ask ChatGPT to look at your resume and suggest topics for LinkedIn posts. Set up Google Alerts to stay informed about your industry and share relevant news with your network. And don’t be shy about sharing your achievements, no matter how small — people notice. Don’t watch the likes. 😊

Bonus Tip: After you send off those resumes, don’t sit and wait. Search for hiring managers or people in your network that work at your target companies on LinkedIn and send them a friendly, authentic message to let them know you’re interested in their company. Ask if they have 10-15 minutes to spare for a quick chat. You’d be surprised how often this can lead to a real opportunity.

AI is a great tool to help with your job search, BUT it’s your hustle, skills, experience, and personality that will land you the job. Let AI assist you. Just remember it’s your responsibility to review all content to ensure it is accurate and a reflection of your authentic self. After all, if you can’t be your authentic self, then this job may not be for you. Good luck!
